   Book Party Guide

A Book Party is a birthday or "Just Because" party that celebrates the love of reading and the giving of books. It's a time for party goers to bring a book to donate to a charity or local school or library and the host to provide books to the guests as party favors and prizes.

Free Book Party Theme Games:

Book PartiesBOOK CHARADES: A charade game with a book twist can be a festive activity for your Book Party theme. On small pieces of paper write names of characters, objects and expressions used in famous books. Fold these papers up and put them in a bowl. Divide the guests into two separate teams. One person from a team picks one of the papers and tries to wordlessly enact what the paper says. His/her team mates try to guess what is on the paper within 3 minutes. Then the other team tries. The team with the most correct guessed answers wins. Some exciting gifts could be party favors such as a coloring book or a set of pens.
Book Party SuppliesBLACKBOARD RELAY: To make your Book Party an event to remember why not have a relay race that implements a blackboard and chalk? In Blackboard Relay, the competing rows must be placed where there is a blackboard at the front of each row. First player of each row has a piece of chalk. At the signal, he runs to the board and writes the name of a book with the chalk, then he returns to his seat, and hands the chalk to the next player. The next player then runs and writes the name of another book in his turn. The teacher is the judge as to whether the book names are correct or not and each team is charged with a foul for each incorrect book name. Gifts such as pretty stationary can make excellent prizes for the team that finishes first.

Two or more rows compete. The player in the back seat rises at a signal from the teacher, runs forward down the aisle, tags the wall at the front of the room, and returns to his seat. As soon as he has reached his seat, the player next in front of him does the same, the relay being complete when each player in turn has run. The line whose front player is seated first wins. Excellent gift ideas for the winners might be to pass out copies of "Cat in the Hat" books.
Book PartiesHARRY POTTER'S MAGIC GAME: A highly entertaining game to play during your Book Party would be this magic mind reading game, which always causes considerable amusement. If skillfully carried out, it will successfully mystify the whole group of kids. It is necessary that the player who is to take the part of the thought-reader should have a helper and then the game is then played as follows: The thought-reader should arrange with the helper ahead of time a certain agreed upon word. Then the thought-reader should ask for four members of the group to each write a word upon a piece of paper and fold it up so as not to be able to be seen and pass these papers to him. The helper, of course, volunteers to be one of the four and writes the word previously agreed upon, for example, "Ohio." The thought-reader places the slips of paper between his fingers, taking care to put the paper of his helper between the third and little finger, he then takes the folded paper from between his thumb and first finger and rubs it, folded as it is, over his forehead. At each rub, he mentions a letter such as "O", rub "H", rub "I" and "O" after which he calls out that some person has written Ohio. "I did," replies the helper. The thought-reader then opens the paper, looks at it, and slips it into his pocket. He has, however, looked at one of the other papers. Consequently, he is now in a position to spell another word, which he proceeds to do in the same manner and thus the game continues to all papers are read.
Book PartiesTIT, TAT, TOE GAME: An entertaining game of darts can be played at your book theme party without the use of any actual darts. There can be up to four players in this game. First write the player's names at the top of the paper in the order in which they will play. Next draw a circle, in the center draw a smaller one placing the number 100 in it. The space between the inner and outer circles must be divided into parts, each having a number in it. The first player closes his eyes and places his hand with a pencil in it just over the paper and repeats this rhyme. "Tit, tat, toe. My first go. Four jolly butcher boys all in a row. Stick one up, stick one down. Stick one in the old man's crown." At the word "crown" the player must stop moving his pencil. If the pencil is not within the circle, or if it is resting on a line then the player gives the pencil to the next player and scores nothing. If, on the contrary, at the end of the rhyme, the pencil is found to be resting in a division of the circle that is not struck out, the player loses his turn as the previous player described. If the pencil is found to be within a division not crossed out, then the points in the division are his and the division is then crossed out. The game continues until all the divisions of the circle have been scored out. The person with the most points wins.
THE ALPHABET GAME: Imagination and knowledge of the alphabet is all that is required for this fun activity. The players sit in a row and the first begins by saying, "I am going on a journey to Athens," or any place beginning with A. The one sitting next asks, "What will you do there?" The verbs, adjectives, and nouns used in the reply must all begin with A; as "Amuse Ailing Authors with Anecdotes." If the player answers correctly, it is the next player's turn; he says perhaps: "I am going to Bradford." "What to do there?" "To Bring Back Bread and Butter." A third says: "I am going to Constantinople." "What to do there?" "To Carry Contented Cats." Any one who makes a mistake must pay a forfeit.

Book Party Ideas and Tips

Book Party IdeasAt a Book party the party supplies and decorations as well as the party favors represent different objects and/or characters from famous and/or well known books. For example, pictures of the characters in Harry Potter and perhaps pictures of a wizard's hat and wizard's wands can be hung up around the room with a table set for a party with party supplies of Harry Potter plates for the cake shaped as a wizard's crystal ball. All of this would make a wonderful Harry Potter party.

The spotlight is more on reading enjoyment and not a lesson or test of read abilities.  Therefore, reading stories at the party would be at easier levels.
