Classy Brunch Casserole
The Fifties are a paradiegm of hardworking folks, bakelite and this Classy Brunch Casserole. Reintroduce your friends and family members to the joys of brunch style foods at your next Fifties Party. Gee Whiz, it's going to be just great.
3 Tablespoons butter, softened
12 slices white bread, crusts removed
1/2 cup (1 stick) butter or margarine
1/2 pound fresh mushrooms, trimmed, sliced
2 cups thinly sliced yellow onions
salt, pepper
1.5 pounds mild Italian sausage
1 pound Cheddar cheese, grated
5 large eggs
2.5 cups milk
1 Tablespoon Dijon mustard
1 teaspoon dry mustard
1 teaspoon ground nutmeg
2 Tablespoons finely chopped fresh parsley
1. Butter the bread with the 3 tablespoons softened butter
and set aside. In 10-inch skillet, melt the 1/2 cup butter;
brown the mushrooms and onions over medium heat for 5 to 8
minutes or until tender. Season to taste with salt and
pepper. Set aside.
2. Cook the sausage, drain well and crumble into bite-sized pieces.
Grease an 11x7 inch baking dish; add and layer half of the bread,
mushroom mixture, sausage, and cheese. Repeat the layers, ending
with the cheese.
3. Mix the eggs, milk, both mustards, nutmeg, 1 teaspoon salt
and 1/8 teaspoon pepper in a medium-sized mixing bowl. Pour
over the sausage and cheese casserole. Cover the casserole
and refrigerate overnight.
4. Heat oven to 350 degrees. When ready to bake, sprinkle the
parsley evenly over the top of the casserole; bake uncovered
for 1 hour or until bubbly. Serve immediately.
Sometimes I just want a warm, filling breakfast without a lot of effort. So, I just make this casserole up.

A fifties party is perfect for all ages. Your invitations could read " Let's all gathet at the Hop." Tell your guests to come in their favorite fifities outfit. Try to find an old record player, one that drops the 45's one by one and play fifties music. When decorating, think "Grease", "Happy Days" and ice cream shop drive-ins as your theme but add pictures of Elvis, and other fifities stars such as "the Big Bopper", "Jerry Lee Lewis" etc. Hang old 45 records from the ceiling to add to the fifties flavor. Here are some fun games and contests for your guests to enjoy: pink bubble gum bubble blowing contest, hula hoop contest, name that tune contest, jitterbug or jive contest, and "The Twist", "The Mashed Potato" and "The Bop" contests. You could give prizes for best and worst dancers and also for the best and worst costumes. For your fifties menu, nothing beats a good old hamburger and a basket of fries unless, of course, it's a good old hot dog and a basket of onion rings. Popcorn and boxes of candy make great 50's snacks. Have ice cream with all the toppings for the guests to enjoy plus: malts, shakes. root beer and coke floats. A record cake will be a groovy end to this hep party.
