Ye Olde Apple Bars
While there wasn't a lot of chocolate around during Medieval times, you'll find that there were plenty of other great treats. Bring some sweet flavor to your Medieval feast with these Ye Olde Apple Bars. Just don't tell anyone you cooked them in a modern oven!
3 egg yolks
2 cups flour
pinch of salt
1/2 butter
2 tablespoons vinegar
6 graham crackers, crushed
12 apples, cored, peeled and cut into slices
1 cup sugar
1 tsp cinnamon
Cut flour into margarine, pie crust style. Add egg yolks and vinegar and
mix well. Divide dough in half and refrigerate several hours or overnight
till firm.
Roll out one piece and dough and line a greased 8 x 13 pan with it (make
sure the dough reaches the tops of the sides). Sprinkly the graham cracker
crumbs over the bottom.
Mix apples with the cinnamon and sugar and fill the crust. Tope with the
second piece of dough and seal the edges. Use a fork to poke holes
randomly over the top to let steam escape. If desired you can brush the
top with melted butter and a light dusting of sugar.
Bake at 400 degrees for one hour or until deep golden brown.
I don't eat a lot of apples, but I got to admit. When I first tried this recipe I took a second helping.

What a fun idea for a kids or adult Party the Medieval theme will be. Start with invitations on parchment style paper. Use calligraphy and a Dragon image to add some flair. The words could read something like "Hear Ye, Hear Ye, Knight ..............has invited you to his castle for an day/evening of tournaments for the brave, ceremonial craft making and a fire breathing cake dessert. Come ye all and let the fun begin." If this is an adult party, you could say "Come to an All Knight Party." Before the knighting ceremony can begin each squire must extract a mini Excalibur to reveal their noble name. Here are a few suggestions: Sir Blue of Berry, Lady Gum of Drop, Sir Coke of Cola, Lady Peanut of Butter, and so on. To create this fun activity, obtain a large piece of Styrofoam and paint it gray. Color code toothpicks (miniature Excalibur’s) with permanent markers and use your name list to correspond with the right color. The kids will draw a toothpick from the rock, to find out their knight name. Create glorious goblets using plastic wine glasses with stems. Glue fake plastic jewels on them and have a toast "Hurrah" to the guest of honor. For the food it is best to keep it simple when it comes to kids. Might I suggest pizza, sandwiches, mac and cheese and cup cakes with swords on them (toothpicks) and the centerpiece will be the Fire Breathing Dragon Cake.
