Nineties Recipes
Lazy Lo Mein This simply tasty and Lazy Lo Mein recipe will certainly get your guests remembering what it was like back in their twenties trying to live off of cheap chinese food and condiment packets in college. However, this lo mein will be quite a bit better tasting and much more satisfying at that Nineties Party. 1/2 lb egg noodles 1/2 lb flank steak 1 tsp. cornstarch 1 tbsp light soy sauce 1 tsp. sherry 1 clove garlic, crushed sauce mixture - 1 tbsp cornstarch 1 c. chicken stock 1 tbsp soy sauce 2 tbsp oyster sauce 1 tsp sesame oil 1 stalk green onion,diced 2 tbsp. oil Par boil fresh egg noodles for 3 minutes. Rinse with cold water and drain. Slice beef into 1/8-inch strips across the grain. Marinate for 15 minutes. Prepare sauce mixture. Have a pot of hot water ready. Heat wok. Add 2 tbsp oil and reheat. Add garlic; brown. Discard. Add beef and salt stir until 3/4 done. Add sauce mixture and stir until thickened. Add green onions and sesame oil. Mix well and keep warm. Drop noodles into hot water. Stir for a minute to heat. Drain well. Pour meat and sauce over noodles. I find it incredibly difficult to reproduce the sauces for a good chinese dish. When I stumbled across this recipe in a book it was like a boon because it actually includes instructions for the sauce! |

If you want to plan a 90's Party think about what was going on at that time? It was the time of The Gulf War started 1991, the Clinton Sex Scandals, people wore Flannel shirts. On your invitations choose a theme which suits your tastes. Decorate with fun pictures like Clinton and play music of the day like some of the following: Nirvana, Vanilla Ice Ace of Base, Spin Doctors, rap music and Garth Books. The most popular TV show of the 90's was Seinfeld. Movies from the 90's that were the most popular were: Fargo, Bodyguard, Forrest Gump, and Schindler's List. A trivia game about the movies, the music and the TV shows from that era would be a fun activity. Give prizes for the most correct answers. When thinking about food from that time don't forget to include: bagel bites, goldfish crackers, potato skins, chips and salsa, and subway sandwiches.
