It’s not surprising that kids love to have Oscar cupcakes for their party as Oscar the Grouch is one of the most lovable grouches you can come across. Decorating cupcakes with faces of Sesame Street characters like Oscar the Grouch can be intimidating, especially for beginner bakers. However, with simple planning you can make this project a great success.
To make Oscar cupcakes you will need a batch of cupcakes, green and black tinted frosting, marshmallows, small black candies and round medium sized red colored hard candies. For best results use gel food coloring to tint the frosting. Begin by piping in the green frosting on the cupcakes and try to be as messy as possible in applying the green frosting to simulate the ratty-looking fur of Oscar. Use the white marshmallows to make the eyes of Oscar. Cut the marshmallows and try your best to come up with the slanty-look of his eyes. Place the eyes on the green frosting and use black frosting to pipe his straight eyebrows and place a black candy on each marshmallow to complete his eye.
Pipe Oscar’s mouth on the Oscar cupcake using the black frosting and make sure the size matches the signature big mouth of Oscar. Now, stick the red candy for his tongue and you have the cutest Oscar cupcake.
An alternate method is to use fondant and frosting to decorate the Oscar cupcakes. Cover the cupcake with green frosting and cut out eyes, eyebrows, mouth and tongue from rolled fondant in appropriate colors. When the fondant cut outs are ready start building the face of Oscar on the frosted cupcake. Another easy way is to get Oscar cupcake toppers and other decorations from a party supplies store and decorate the frosted cupcakes with these toppers. A variety of Oscar cupcake decorations are available in both edible and non-edible types, just make sure that the non-edible toppers are food safe before you use them to decorate your Oscar cupcakes.
