Yom Kippur is spent fasting and seeking atonement for one's sins. Invite your guests to learn about the Jewish holiday. When your fasting ends at nightfall enjoy breaking it with some dishes that aren't heavy or spicy as they may affect your digestive system after fasting. Try some fish in yogurt sauce or apricot chicken. Make your Holiday party original!

Israeli Stew

This exotic stew from Israel will be a great way for your family to observe Yom Kippur at dinnertime. It takes a while to cook so be sure to get a start on it early in the day.

5 cup Trader Joe's maranara and the rest water
1 1/2 cup Great northern beans
1 cup wheat berries
6 small potatoes -- cut in half
1 large onion -- sliced
4 clove garlic -- minced
5 tsp cumin -- ground
3 tsp tumeric
1/2 tsp black pepper -- ground
2 green peppers

Mix together all ingredients in crockpot. Cook at high 8 to 10 hours.

I do have some trouble finding ingredients for this stew, but it's really good when I can make it.

Everyone can break the fast together at your Yom Kippur Party. Yom Kippur is the "Day of Atonement" , Jewish New Year and a great time to celebrate with immediate family or a larger group. After a day of fasting and seeking forgiveness for wrongs that might have been done to another person, everyone will want to eat and have a little fun. It's easy to find some bright silver and gold ceiling dangles and wall hangings to decorate the house with. You can also find many Yom Kippur party favors, party ware and tablecloths to help with your decorating needs. Some fun activities for this party might be Jeopardy or Trivia. One of the most important foods for this holiday is Kreplach and rice. Another staple of the feast is Challah. Other popular foods that are served for this occasion are: Sweet Potato soup, Chicken Rice and Peas, Kugel, Tzimmes, lots of fish like Salmon and Cod and plenty of sweet Carrot cake, Honey cake and Applesauce cake. Traditional 'sweets' for the pre Yom Kippur feast are usually fruits like Apples, carrots, and Honey. Chocolate is a no no, as well as caffeine.
